Revolut Review for Expats in Ireland (2026): Fees, Irish IBAN, Savings and Tax
Open your Revolut account here
Revolut is usually the first account people open when they land in Ireland, often before they have a PPSN, a lease or an Irish address on paper. We're a tax agent, so we look at it the way our clients end up asking about it: can your salary and your Revenue refund go into it, is the money protected, and which tax does Revolut deduct for you and which tax is left to you. Here's the honest picture, with the fees as published on Revolut's Irish site on 29 October 2026.
- Revolut in Ireland is a bank, with IE IBANs and deposits covered to €100,000 by the Lithuanian scheme: open your Revolut account here.
- Plans run from Standard (free) to Ultra (€55 a month); Standard covers €1,000 of currency exchange and 5 ATM withdrawals (€200) a month.
- Instant Access Savings have 33% DIRT taken off for you; stocks, ETFs and crypto have no Irish tax deducted, so those go on your tax return.
Is Revolut a real bank in Ireland?
- Yes. Irish customers bank with the Irish branch of Revolut Bank UAB, licensed in Lithuania, with the Central Bank of Ireland applying Irish consumer rules.
- Your deposits are protected up to €100,000 by Lithuania's deposit insurance scheme, not by the Irish Deposit Guarantee Scheme.
- The entity. Revolut Bank UAB's Irish branch is registered at 2 Dublin Landings, Dublin 1. The bank itself is licensed in Lithuania, which is why your contract and the deposit cover are Lithuanian (Revolut deposit information sheet).
- An Irish IBAN. Customers resident in Ireland have IE IBANs, so the account looks like any Irish bank account to an employer, a landlord or Revenue (Revolut).
- €100,000 of deposit cover. The Lithuanian scheme covers up to €100,000 per person across all your deposits at Revolut Bank UAB, the same ceiling as the Irish scheme. Every EU deposit guarantee scheme works to the same EU minimum.
- What isn't a deposit. Flexible Cash Funds (money market funds), stocks, ETFs and crypto are run by other Revolut companies and are not covered by deposit insurance. Flexible Cash Funds and investments have a separate investor scheme capped at €22,000 that only applies if the investment firm fails (Revolut).
Revolut plans and fees in Ireland
- Standard is free; Plus is €3.99, Premium €8.99, Metal €15.99 and Ultra €55 a month.
- The fees that matter for most expats are the monthly exchange allowance, the weekend exchange fee and the free ATM allowance.
| Plan | Price | Free exchange a month | Weekend exchange fee | Free ATM a month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | €0 | €1,000, then 1% | 1% | 5 withdrawals or €200 |
| Plus | €3.99/month (€40/year) | €3,000, then 0.5% | 0.5% | €200 |
| Premium | €8.99/month | Unlimited | None | €400 |
| Metal | €15.99/month (€155/year) | Unlimited | None | €800 |
| Ultra | €55/month (€540/year) | Unlimited | None | €2,000 |
- ATM withdrawals over the allowance cost 2%, minimum €1 each, on every plan. On Standard the allowance ends at whichever comes first, five withdrawals or €200, counted over a rolling month (Revolut Standard fees).
- The Standard card costs €7.99 to deliver. Delivery is free on Plus (standard post), Premium, Metal and Ultra; express delivery is €19.99 on Standard and Plus (Revolut Plus fees).
- Weekday exchange within the allowance has no added fee. The allowance covers currency, crypto and commodity exchanges together. If you send money home every month, the allowance and the weekend fee decide what you pay. Our Revolut vs Wise comparison works it out for a typical monthly transfer.
- Free trades depend on the plan. Standard includes 1 commission-free stock order a month, Plus 3, Premium 5, Metal and Ultra 10; after that it's 0.25% or €1, whichever is more (0.12%, minimum €1, on Ultra) (Revolut).
Opening a Revolut account as a newcomer
- You need to be 18 or over (16 for a limited account), a legal resident of Ireland, and have a valid passport or national ID plus a selfie.
- Proof of address is only asked for in some cases; you can open the account before your PPSN arrives, but Revolut asks for it within about 90 days.
This is the reason so many people start with Revolut. Traditional Irish banks usually want proof of an Irish address before they open an account, and many landlords and employers want an Irish account before they give you the documents that prove your address. Revolut breaks that loop for most people.
- Download the app and choose Ireland as your country of residence. Revolut's requirement is that you're a legal resident of a supported country (Revolut).
- Verify your identity with a government-issued ID and a selfie. The documents accepted are listed in the app during sign-up.
- Be ready for an address check. If Revolut asks, it accepts a document from a government body, a utility company or a financial institution issued in the last 6 months, or a rental agreement, showing a residential address (not a PO box or a hotel) (Revolut).
- Add your PPSN when it arrives. Revolut has been reported to ask Irish customers for it within 90 days and to restrict the account until it's added (Irish Times), and Instant Access Savings are only open to Irish tax residents with a PPSN. If you haven't applied yet, our guide to opening a bank account in Ireland covers the PPSN and the address problem together.
- Open the account. If it's right for you, open your Revolut account at this link.
Can your salary and your tax refund go into Revolut?
- Yes. With an IE IBAN your employer pays you like any Irish account, and Revenue pays refunds into any SEPA account you add to myAccount.
- Even a foreign EU IBAN can't legally be refused by an Irish employer: that's IBAN discrimination, banned under the EU SEPA Regulation.
- Salary. Give payroll your IBAN and BIC from the app. The Central Bank of Ireland says an employer can't insist you open or keep an Irish bank account, and you can report refusals to ibandiscrimination@centralbank.ie (Central Bank of Ireland).
- Your tax refund. Add your bank details in myAccount, under My Profile (Revenue). Revenue pays refunds into SEPA accounts and only rules out accounts outside SEPA; with no bank details on file it posts a cheque instead (Revenue).
- Check your first payslip. If you started work before your PPSN or your Revenue registration was in place, you were probably on emergency tax. The overpayment comes back, but only if someone claims it: see emergency tax in Ireland and our first-time refund guide.
Revolut savings and DIRT: what you actually earn
- Instant Access Savings paid 2.00% AER on Standard, Plus and Premium, 2.25% on Metal and 2.50% on Ultra on 29 October 2026 (variable), up to €100,000.
- Revolut deducts 33% DIRT before paying the interest, so for most savers there's nothing more to pay.
Starting data (assumptions): Marta keeps €10,000 in Instant Access Savings on the Standard plan for a full year at 2.00% AER, and the rate doesn't change. AER already includes the daily compounding, so the gross interest for the year is the balance times the AER.
| Step | Amount |
|---|---|
| Gross interest | €10,000 × 2.00% = €200 |
| DIRT deducted by Revolut | €200 × 33% = €66 |
| Interest she keeps | €200 − €66 = €134 |
| Effective rate after tax | €134 ÷ €10,000 = 1.34% |
No USC applies to deposit interest, and because DIRT is deducted by the bank it's normally the final tax on it (if you're self-employed, PRSI can still be due on it). Revolut states the deduction itself: 33% DIRT on any interest you earn, as Irish tax law requires (Revolut).
The other savings product works differently. Flexible Cash Funds look like savings in the app but are money market funds: not covered by deposit insurance, and taxed by exit tax that the fund deducts (38% in 2026) instead of DIRT. We compare the two, with the same €10,000 in each, in Revolut savings and interest: how they're taxed in Ireland.
Investing through Revolut: the tax is on you
- Revolut doesn't deduct Irish capital gains tax, exit tax or income tax on dividends: it only says proceeds may be taxable under your local rules and gives you trading statements.
- Shares and crypto gains are taxed at 31% after the €1,270 annual exemption; most ETFs fall under exit tax instead.
- Statements, not tax. Revolut points Irish customers to the statements in the app (Stocks, then the menu, then Statements) and leaves the reporting to you (Revolut).
- CGT has two deadlines a year. Gains from January to November are paid by 15 December; December gains by 31 January. The rules, the new 31% rate from 7 October 2026 and the netting of losses are in our capital gains tax guide.
- ETFs are different. An EU-domiciled ETF bought in the app is usually taxed under the exit tax regime, with an 8-year deemed disposal and no annual exemption. See exit tax on ETFs.
- One article for all of it. Revolut stocks, ETFs and crypto: Irish tax explained covers what to declare from the Revolut statements, form by form.
What we like, and what to watch
- The strengths are speed, an Irish IBAN without proof of address, and cheap currency exchange within the allowance.
- The things to watch are the fair-usage fees on Standard, weekend exchange fees, and investment products that look like savings but aren't deposits.
| Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|
| An IE IBAN on your first days in Ireland, often with only a passport | Deposit cover is Lithuanian, not Irish (same €100,000 limit) |
| Salary and Revenue refunds, like any Irish account | 1% on exchanges above €1,000 a month, and 1% at weekends, on Standard |
| Savings with DIRT already deducted | Flexible Cash Funds are funds, not deposits: no deposit cover, and 38% exit tax instead of 33% DIRT |
| Switching under the Central Bank's switching code, completed within 10 working days | Investments have no Irish tax deducted: the CGT and exit tax deadlines are yours |
| Joint accounts and accounts for 16 and 17 year olds | 2% on ATM withdrawals above the free allowance, minimum €1 |
Our verdict: who Revolut suits
- Revolut is the quickest way for a newcomer to get an Irish IBAN, and the free Standard plan is enough for most people who are paid in euro and spend in euro.
- If you send more than €1,000 a month abroad, compare the paid plans or Wise first; if you invest, plan for the tax return.
- Just arrived, waiting for a PPSN and a lease: Standard does the job. Get your salary paid in, then add your PPSN as soon as it arrives.
- Sending money home every month: if it's above €1,000, either move to Plus (€3,000 allowance) or compare with Wise; our Revolut vs Wise comparison has the figures.
- Saving a deposit for a house: Instant Access Savings with DIRT deducted is simple; keep it under €100,000 at Revolut Bank UAB to stay inside the deposit cover.
- Investing in ETFs or crypto: the app is easy, the Irish tax isn't. Keep the statements and read our Revolut tax guide before your first sale.
- Running a business or working for yourself: look at Revolut Business instead; we reviewed it in Revolut Business in Ireland.

Questions we get asked
Is my money safe in Revolut in Ireland?
Money in your Revolut current account and Instant Access Savings is a bank deposit with Revolut Bank UAB, covered up to €100,000 per person by Lithuania's deposit insurance scheme. Flexible Cash Funds, stocks, ETFs and crypto are not deposits and are not covered by that scheme.
Does Revolut give you an Irish IBAN?
Yes. Customers resident in Ireland bank with Revolut Bank UAB's Irish branch and have IBANs starting with IE, so employers and Revenue treat the account like any Irish bank account.
Does Revolut deduct DIRT in Ireland?
Yes, on Instant Access Savings: Revolut deducts 33% DIRT from the interest before paying it. Flexible Cash Funds have exit tax (38% in 2026) deducted by the fund instead. Nothing is deducted on stocks, ETFs or crypto, which you declare yourself.
Can I get my Revenue tax refund paid into Revolut?
Yes. Add your Revolut IBAN to your bank details in myAccount and Revenue pays refunds into it, as it does with any SEPA account. Without bank details on file, Revenue posts a cheque.
Do I need a PPSN to open a Revolut account in Ireland?
Not to open it: you need a valid ID, a selfie and to be legally resident in Ireland, with proof of address only in some cases. Revolut then asks for your PPSN, reportedly within 90 days, and you need a PPSN and Irish tax residence to open Instant Access Savings.
