Revolut Stocks, ETFs and Crypto: How They're Taxed in Ireland
Open your Revolut account here
Revolut says around 348,000 people in Ireland invest through its app every month (Irish Times). What it doesn't do is deduct Irish tax: no capital gains tax on your sales, no exit tax on your ETFs, no income tax on your dividends. It gives you statements and leaves the rest to you, which in Ireland means three different tax regimes, two payment dates a year for capital gains and, for most ETF holders, a Form 11. This guide sorts each Revolut product into the right box and shows the arithmetic.
- Revolut doesn't deduct Irish tax on shares, ETFs or crypto: you get statements and declare it yourself (open your Revolut account here).
- Shares and crypto: capital gains tax at 31% (from 7 October 2026) after the €1,270 annual exemption, paid by 15 December or 31 January.
- ETFs and the Robo-Advisor's funds: exit tax at 38% in 2026 and 35% from 2027 (announced), no exemption, declared on a Form 11.
Which tax applies to which Revolut product?
- Individual shares and crypto fall under capital gains tax; ETFs and other funds fall under exit tax; dividends from shares are income.
- Getting the box right matters: CGT has an annual exemption and lets you use losses, exit tax has neither.
| What you hold on Revolut | Irish tax | Rate | Where you declare it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shares (US, EU or other companies) | Capital gains tax on sales | 31% from 7 October 2026 (33% before), after €1,270 a year | Form CG1 if you don't otherwise file a return, or your Form 11 |
| Dividends on shares | Income tax, USC and PRSI | 20% or 40% plus USC, less treaty tax withheld | Form 12 or Form 11 |
| EU-domiciled ETFs and Robo-Advisor portfolios | Exit tax | 38% in 2026, 35% from 2027 (announced) | Form 11, offshore funds section |
| Flexible Cash Funds | Exit tax, deducted by the fund | 38% in 2026, 35% from 2027 (announced) | Nothing to declare for most PAYE workers |
| Crypto | Capital gains tax on each disposal | 31%, same exemption as shares | Form CG1 or Form 11 (not the online Form 12) |
Revolut's own tax page for Irish customers only says that proceeds may be subject to tax under your local rules and points you to the trading statements in the app (Revolut). Stocks and ETFs are provided by Revolut Securities Europe UAB and crypto by Revolut Digital Assets Europe Ltd, so nothing is deducted at source the way an Irish bank deducts DIRT. The exception is Flexible Cash Funds: those are Irish money market funds that deduct exit tax themselves, covered in how Revolut savings are taxed.
Shares on Revolut: capital gains tax
- The gain is worked out in euro: sale proceeds less cost and fees, each converted at the rate on the day.
- Sales from 1 January to 30 November are paid by 15 December; December sales by 31 January; the return follows by 31 October of the next year.
- Euro, not dollars. Revolut shows US shares in dollars. Revenue wants the cost converted at the rate on the purchase date and the proceeds at the rate on the sale date, so a dollar gain can be a smaller or larger euro gain, or even a loss. Our currency converter shows which rate Revenue accepts.
- The €1,270 exemption is per person, per year. It comes off your total gains for the year after losses, and it doesn't carry forward if you don't use it.
- Losses on shares or crypto offset gains on shares or crypto in the same year, and unused losses carry forward. They can't be set against exit tax on ETFs.
- Two payment dates, one return. Revenue sets 15 December for gains made from January to November and 31 January for December gains (Revenue). The rules, the rate cut and the matching of shares bought on different days are in our capital gains tax guide.
Dividends from shares held on Revolut
- Dividends are income: taxed at 20% or 40% plus USC on the gross amount, with a credit for tax withheld abroad under a treaty.
- On US shares the treaty rate is 15% with a W-8BEN; check in the app that one is on file, or you may lose more to the US than the treaty allows.
Revolut pays dividends into your account with any foreign tax already withheld and nothing deducted for Ireland. You declare the gross dividend, converted to euro, and the foreign tax separately; the credit is worked out from there. If your dividends and other non-PAYE income are less than €5,000 for the year, a Form 12 in myAccount is enough. The full mechanics, including UK dividends and PRSI on unearned income, are in tax on foreign dividends and interest.
ETFs and the Robo-Advisor: exit tax
- UCITS ETFs domiciled in Ireland or elsewhere in the EU are investment funds for Irish tax, so sales, payouts and 8-year deemed disposals are taxed at the exit tax rate.
- There's no annual exemption, losses don't offset CGT gains, and a PAYE employee still files a Form 11 for any year with a tax event.
- Rates. 38% for 2026 events and 35% from 1 January 2027, as announced in Budget 2027 and subject to the Finance Bill; no USC or PRSI on top.
- The 8-year rule. Every purchase has its own clock: eight years after you buy, you pay exit tax on the gain so far as if you'd sold, credited later when you do sell. Monthly investing means a deemed disposal every month, eight years on.
- The Robo-Advisor buys ETFs for you, so the same rules apply to each ETF in the portfolio, including each automatic purchase.
- Nobody files it for you. Revenue puts the onus on the investor where units are held through a broker. Our exit tax guide and the exit tax calculator show the timeline for a regular plan.
Crypto on Revolut
- Every disposal is a CGT event: selling for euro, swapping one coin for another, or spending crypto.
- From the 2026 tax year EU crypto providers report customer transactions to tax authorities under DAC8, so assume Revenue will see your activity.
Revolut's crypto service is provided by Revolut Digital Assets Europe Ltd, licensed in Cyprus under the EU's MiCA rules, and it doesn't deduct Irish tax. The €1,270 exemption and the payment dates are shared with your share gains, and losses on one offset gains on the other. Swaps, staking rewards and the cost of coins bought at different times are covered in our crypto tax guide.
Worked example: shares, an ETF and crypto in one year
- A €3,000 share gain and a €400 crypto loss in November 2026 leave €1,330 taxable after the exemption: €412.30 of CGT by 15 December 2026.
- A €1,000 ETF gain in the same year costs €380 of exit tax, with no exemption, on the 2026 Form 11 due by 31 October 2027.
Starting data (assumptions): Ciara is Irish resident and domiciled and a PAYE employee. In November 2026 she sells US shares on Revolut for a gain of €3,000 after converting cost and proceeds to euro and deducting fees, and sells some crypto at a loss of €400. In the same year she sells part of an EU-domiciled ETF for a gain of €1,000. She has no other gains, no losses brought forward and no dividends.
| Step | Amount |
|---|---|
| Share gain less crypto loss | €3,000 − €400 = €2,600 |
| Less annual exemption | €2,600 − €1,270 = €1,330 |
| CGT at 31% (sold after 7 October 2026) | €1,330 × 31% = €412.30, paid by 15 December 2026 |
| ETF gain, exit tax at 38% | €1,000 × 38% = €380, no exemption, no offset for the crypto loss |
| Total Irish tax | €412.30 + €380 = €792.30 |
Because she has an ETF disposal, Ciara files a Form 11 for 2026 by 31 October 2027 (18 November if she files and pays on ROS), with the CGT and the offshore funds section on the same return; without the ETF, a Form CG1 would have done for the shares and crypto. If the ETF had been an individual share instead, its €1,000 gain would have been €310 of CGT and could have absorbed the crypto loss.
Filling your return from Revolut's statements
- Download three things from the app each January: the stocks trading statement (profit and loss), the account statement for dividends, and the crypto statement.
- Convert each sale and purchase to euro at the transaction date, sort each item into CGT, exit tax or income, then pay and file by the dates above.
- Download the statements. For stocks, Revolut puts them under Stocks, then the menu, then Statements. Keep the crypto statement separately.
- Split by tax. Shares and crypto to the CGT list, ETFs and funds to the exit tax list, dividends to the income list. Each ETF purchase needs its date for the 8-year rule.
- Convert to euro. Use the rate on the day for each sale and its matching purchase; for dividends, the euro amount received or Revenue's average rate for the year.
- Pay CGT before you file. Pay the 15 December and 31 January amounts through myAccount or ROS; the return comes later.
- File the right form by 31 October. CGT can't go on the online Form 12: use Form CG1 if you don't otherwise file a return, and a Form 11 as soon as there's an ETF event. Our Form 11 guide walks through each panel.
If the statements don't add up, or you've been investing for a few years without declaring anything, our CGT Review rebuilds the figures from Revolut's exports and files the open years.

Questions we get asked
Does Revolut report to Revenue?
Revolut doesn't file your tax, but financial institutions in the EU exchange account information with tax authorities under the Common Reporting Standard, and crypto providers report under DAC8 from 2026. Plan on Revenue being able to see your Revolut investment accounts and declare them yourself.
Do I pay CGT on Revolut stocks if I don't withdraw the money?
Yes. The tax event is the sale, not the withdrawal. Selling shares and keeping the cash in Revolut, or reinvesting it, is still a disposal for capital gains tax.
Are Revolut ETFs taxed as capital gains in Ireland?
Usually not. ETFs domiciled in Ireland or elsewhere in the EU, as UCITS ETFs are, are taxed under the exit tax regime: 38% for 2026 and 35% from 2027 as announced, with no annual exemption and an 8-year deemed disposal, declared on a Form 11.
Is swapping one crypto for another on Revolut taxable?
Yes. A swap is a disposal of the first coin at its market value in euro, so any gain is subject to capital gains tax, even though no euro reached your account.
