Which rate does Revenue accept for Czech koruny?

A converter tells you what your money is worth today. A tax return needs the euro value at a specific point in time, and Revenue has two rules:

  • Income (salary earned abroad, rent, dividends, interest, a pension): the CZK is not on Revenue's list of annual average rates (Tax and Duty Manual Part 04-06-12), and Revenue doesn't say which rate to use instead. Use the rate you actually received when the money was converted, or a published central bank rate for the year, apply the same method all year, and keep a note of the rate used.
  • Gains and share awards (a sale of shares or crypto priced in CZK, an RSU vest): the euro value at the rate on the date of the transaction. Both the purchase and the sale are converted on their own dates, so part of your gain or loss can be the exchange rate itself.

Czechia has a treaty with Ireland; Czech-source income still goes on an Irish return in euro once you are resident here.

Questions about CZK to EUR

What is the CZK to EUR exchange rate today?

The converter above shows today's European Central Bank reference rate for Czech koruny to euro, updated every business day around 16:00 CET. It is a mid-market reference: the rate you get from a bank, card or transfer service will include a margin on top.

Which exchange rate does Revenue accept for Czech income on an Irish tax return?

The CZK is not on Revenue's list of annual average rates (Tax and Duty Manual Part 04-06-12), and Revenue doesn't say which rate to use instead. For foreign income (salary, rent, dividends) in Czech koruny, use the rate you actually received when the money was converted, or a published central bank rate for the year, apply the same method all year, and keep a note of the rate used. For a capital gain or an RSU vest, the euro value is taken at the rate on the date of the transaction.

Do I pay Irish tax on Czech koruny I bring to Ireland?

Moving your own savings is not income and is not taxed. What matters is whether income or gains arose while you were Irish tax resident: if you are not Irish-domiciled, foreign investment income and gains are taxed only when you bring them into Ireland (the remittance basis), so keep pre-arrival capital and post-arrival income in separate accounts.

Why is the rate my bank gives me worse than the one shown here?

The rate shown here is a mid-market reference rate with no margin. Banks, card networks and transfer services buy at one rate and sell at another, and some add a fee; the gap is their charge. For a tax return, what counts is a consistent, documented rate: Revenue's own tables are built on mid-market rates, and the rate you actually received is also accepted.
