Irish Tax Help on WhatsApp: How We Support Expats

Illustration of a person holding an Irish payslip beside a euro coin symbol

Moving to Ireland means a new tax system, a new payslip and a new set of acronyms, often in your second language. Most people don't need a long meeting to sort it out. They need someone who knows the system to look at their situation and tell them what to do next. That's what our WhatsApp line is for.

This guide explains who we help, what kind of support you can get, how a conversation with us actually works, and how to tell a genuine message from a scam.

Who we help

Most people who message us earn a salary in Ireland and pay tax through PAYE. Many moved here from abroad, some last month and some ten years ago. They usually fit one of these situations:

  • You've just arrived. You have a new PPSN, a first Irish payslip and no idea whether the numbers are right. Our guide to moving to Ireland and cross-border taxes covers the first steps.
  • You're on emergency tax. Your payslip shows far more tax than you expected. It's fixable, and the overpayment comes back to you. Read how emergency tax works.
  • You've been here for years and never claimed anything. Revenue lets you go back four years. Start with claiming PAYE tax back for the first time.
  • You're leaving Ireland. There's often a refund to claim on your final year. See our guide to the leaving Ireland tax refund.
  • You invest or rent out property. Shares, crypto and rental income each have their own forms and deadlines. Our capital gains tax guide is a good place to start.
  • You work from home or contract. There's a relief for home working, and contractors usually need their own return. Read about remote working relief.

You don't need to know which of these you are before you write. Working that out is part of the help. If you'd like to read more first, our who we help page goes through each situation in detail, and we have tax guides by nationality for the most common home countries.

What we can do for you

Behind every WhatsApp conversation sits one of six services. You don't have to pick one. We'll tell you which, if any, fits.

  • Tax Back. We review four years of your Revenue records and claim every credit and relief you were entitled to but never received. No refund, no fee.
  • Payslip Review. We check your tax credits and rate band are set up correctly, so you stop overpaying every month. If you want to check it yourself first, read how to read your Irish payslip.
  • Tax Return. If you have income beyond your salary, such as rent, freelance work or foreign income, we work out which return you need and file it.
  • CGT Review. Sold shares, crypto or property? We calculate the gain, apply the exemptions and file it on time.
  • Termination Review. If you've been made redundant, we check every relief that applies to your redundancy payment, so you don't pay more tax on it than you have to.
  • VIP Premium. For cross-border and more complex situations, a tax adviser stays with you all year rather than for one claim.

You'll find what each one includes on our services page.

Questions you can send us

No question is too small. These are the kinds of things people ask us on WhatsApp, with the guide that answers each one:

The guides give you the general rule. On WhatsApp, we tell you how it applies to you.

How a conversation with us works

IN SHORT
  • You message us on WhatsApp, a real person replies, and you decide whether to fix it yourself or have us handle it.
  • We only deal with Revenue for you after you authorise us as your agent.
  1. You send a message. Use the WhatsApp link in the footer of every page on this site. A few lines are enough to start.
  2. A real person replies. Not a bot and not a script. We ask whatever we need to understand your case, then tell you in plain English what we think applies to you.
  3. You decide what happens next. Sometimes the answer is a quick fix you can make yourself in Revenue's myAccount, and we'll show you how. Sometimes it's worth having us handle it. There's no pressure and no upsell either way.
  4. If we act for you, we register as your agent. Before we deal with Revenue on your behalf, you authorise Irish Tax Mate as your tax agent. You can do that online in about two minutes. Our authorisation terms explain exactly what that allows us to do.
  5. We do the work and keep you posted. We review your records, file what's needed and tell you the outcome.

What to include in your first message

You don't need documents to start. These five details let us give you a useful answer straight away:

  • When you started working in Ireland
  • Whether you've had more than one employer, or gaps between jobs
  • Your job, especially if it's in healthcare, education or another sector with flat rate expenses
  • Anything beyond your salary: rent you pay, rent you receive, shares, crypto or side income
  • Whether you're single, married or in a civil partnership

Don't send your myAccount password, card details or bank details in a chat, to us or anyone else. As your registered agent, we don't need your password to see your Revenue records.

An example of how it goes

Here's an illustrative example. It isn't a real client, but it's the shape most conversations take.

EXAMPLE

A nurse moved to Ireland at the start of 2024. A colleague mentions flat rate expenses, so she sends us a message. She has to buy and wash her own uniforms, her income has stayed within the 20% standard rate band every year (€44,000 for a single person in 2026), and she has never claimed anything.

That puts her on the top nurse amount of €733 a year, which has been the same for every year since 2020. It reduces the income she's taxed on, so it's worth 20% of €733 to her.

YearAllowanceCalculationBack to her
2024€733€733 × 20%€146.60
2025€733€733 × 20%€146.60
Refund for past years€293.20
2026€733applied through her payslips€146.60

The two past years come back as a refund once a return is filed for each. The current year is applied through her payslips once the allowance is on her record. If part of her income had been taxed at 40%, each year would be worth €293.20 instead.

A question, a quick check of the facts, a clear answer with the arithmetic shown. If you'd like a rough figure for your own case first, try our tax refund calculator.

What Revenue actually does, and doesn't do

People now expect help over messaging apps, so scammers use them too. Here's what Revenue itself says, on its page about fraudulent emails, SMS and phone calls:

  • Revenue will never contact you by email, SMS or phone call to tell you about a tax refund or a bill.
  • Revenue does not correspond with its customers through traditional email or SMS.
  • On a phone call, Revenue will never ask for your bank account details, card numbers or passwords.

Real refunds and bills show up in your Revenue myAccount. If a message says you're owed money or must pay immediately, log in to myAccount yourself, not through a link in the message, and check.

We're a private firm, not Revenue, and we'll never claim to be. Our WhatsApp number is the one linked on this website. If anyone messaging in our name asks for a password or card details, don't reply.

Questions we get asked

Do I need to send documents before I message you?

No. Start with a few lines about your situation. If we later need something, such as a payslip, we'll tell you exactly what and why.

Is it a real person or a chatbot?

A real person. We'd rather take a little longer and give you an answer that fits your case than send a generic reply.

Will I be pushed into paying for a service?

No. If the fix is something you can do yourself in myAccount, we'll tell you how. You only engage us if you want us to handle it.

Can you talk to Revenue for me?

Yes, once you've authorised Irish Tax Mate as your tax agent. You can do that online in about two minutes. Until then, we can only advise you.

How do I know a WhatsApp message is really from you?

Our number is the one linked on this website. We never claim to be Revenue, and you should never share your myAccount password or card details in any chat.
