Form 12 in Ireland: What It Is, Who Files It and How

Form 12 is the tax return for PAYE employees. Today you complete it online in myAccount, and for most people it's how you claim tax back or declare a small amount of income outside your job.
In short: Form 12 is the common name for the PAYE Income Tax Return, which you now complete in myAccount under "Review your tax for the previous 4 years". You use it to claim credits and reliefs, declare non-PAYE income of up to €5,000 taxable (and €30,000 gross), and get your Statement of Liability. Refund claims go back four years. Estimate yours with our tax refund calculator.
What Form 12 is today
In short: Form 12 and the PAYE Income Tax Return are the same thing. Online it lives in myAccount, which already shows what Revenue knows about your pay and tax. The paper version, Form 12S, is for people who can't use online services.
Revenue's own page calls it the PAYE Income Tax Return; "Form 12" is the name most people still search for. You won't find a button labelled Form 12 in myAccount, but the return you complete there does the same job.
The paper Form 12S is a simplified return for PAYE taxpayers with routine tax affairs who can't go online. Unlike the online return, it doesn't show the details Revenue already holds, so you have to fill them in yourself.
Who needs to file one
In short: you complete a Form 12 to claim extra credits, reliefs or expenses, to declare income outside your job, to get your Statement of Liability, or to claim a refund. If your only income is a salary taxed through PAYE and you have nothing to claim, there's no return you're obliged to file.
- You want money back. The Rent Tax Credit, medical expenses and remote working relief aren't applied through payroll unless you claimed them during the year. Adding them to that year's return is how you get the overpaid tax back.
- You have a little income outside your job. If your taxable non-PAYE income is €5,000 or less and the gross is €30,000 or less, you declare it on Form 12. Revenue then collects the tax by reducing your tax credits and rate band. Rent is the usual case: see our rental income tax guide.
- You want your Statement of Liability. It's Revenue's year-end summary of what you earned, the tax you paid and the tax you owed. It arrives about five days after you submit the return for that year.
- Revenue asks you to. If you have small non-PAYE income that Revenue collects through your tax credits, it may ask you to file a return for the year so it can check the figures.
Revenue sets out these cases on its page on whether you need to submit a tax return.
Form 12 or Form 11?
In short: you move to Form 11 if you're self-employed, a director controlling more than 15% of a company (or jointly assessed with one), or your taxable non-PAYE income is over €5,000 or the gross is over €30,000. Everyone else on PAYE uses Form 12.
| Your situation | Which return |
|---|---|
| Salary only, claiming credits or a refund | Form 12 in myAccount |
| Salary, plus €3,000 taxable rental income from €12,000 of rent | Form 12: under €5,000 taxable and €30,000 gross |
| Salary, plus a side business making €3,000 profit on €35,000 of sales | Form 11: gross non-PAYE income is over €30,000 |
| Salary, plus €6,000 of taxable non-PAYE income | Form 11: over €5,000 taxable |
| Director controlling more than 15% of the company | Form 11, even if all your pay goes through PAYE |
| Self-employed | Form 11 |
Deadlines, preliminary tax and surcharges for the self-assessed return are in our Form 11 guide.
Worked example: one return, two claims
In short: a single renter who paid enough income tax in 2025 and had €800 of medical bills gets back €1,160 for that year by adding two claims to the 2025 return.
You rented your home all through 2025 at €1,200 a month, paid €800 for GP visits and prescriptions with no insurance refund, and claimed neither during the year:
| 2025 claim | Amount |
|---|---|
| Rent Tax Credit: 20% of €14,400 is €2,880, capped at €1,000 | €1,000 |
| Medical expenses: €800 × 20% | €160 |
| Overpaid tax for 2025 | €1,160 |
Your Statement of Liability shows the overpayment and Revenue pays it to the bank account on your record. Credits can't exceed the income tax you paid, so a year with a lower tax bill gives back less. See the Rent Tax Credit guide and medical expenses relief.

- Click "Request" next to the year you want to file for.
- Check what Revenue already holds, then add your credits, reliefs and any other income, and submit.

The full walk-through, with the credits people miss most, is in our guide to claiming four years of tax back.
Is there a Form 12 deadline?
In short: for claims, Revenue says a return "must be made within four years after the end of the tax year". That means 2022 closes on 31 December 2026, and 2023, 2024 and 2025 stay open longer.
The 31 October date you may have seen is the self-assessment deadline for Form 11, not a cut-off for PAYE refund claims. The year-by-year dates are in our 2022 deadline guide and the Ireland tax calendar.

Questions we get asked
Is Form 12 the same as the PAYE Income Tax Return?
Yes. "Form 12" is the name most people use; in myAccount it's called the PAYE Income Tax Return. The paper version for people who can't go online is Form 12S.
Do I have to file a Form 12 every year?
No. If your only income is a salary taxed through PAYE and you have nothing to claim, you don't have to. You do need one to claim credits or reliefs, declare other income or get a refund.
Can I file a Form 12 for previous years?
Yes, for the last four tax years. In 2026 that's 2022 to 2025, and 2022 closes on 31 December 2026. Each year is a separate return.
What if my other income is more than €5,000?
If your taxable non-PAYE income is over €5,000, or the gross is over €30,000, you register for self-assessment and file a Form 11 instead.
How long after filing will I hear from Revenue?
Revenue issues your Statement of Liability about five days after you submit the return, and any refund is paid to the bank account on your Revenue record.
